Netflix’s new dating series Offline Love is a love letter to the hopeless romantics

Netflix has just recently introduced a fresh take on dating reality shows with its newest series, Offline Love. Set in the colorful and charming city of Nice, France—known for its majestic coastline and vibrant city life—the show follows ten young Japanese adults embarking on the trip of a lifetime. Their goal: to have a fateful encounter and finally experience a defining moment with their soulmates.

What Makes Offline Love Unique?

Offline Love sets apart itself from other dating shows because of its mechanics wherein the single contestants must meet their future partners within ten days in an unfamiliar city in France. Making it more exciting is that participants can only engage in traditional romance and must completely ditch their digital devices. They would rely solely on handwritten letters, tourist guidebooks, and perfect timing as means of communication.

At first, audiences were introduced to each participant’s background—from their respective careers to personalities—and their reasons for leaving their home country in search of love. Each single brings unique characteristics to the series, making the audience eager to follow their journey. As the series progresses, the participants get acquainted with one another. They test the waters through raw conversations and explore Nice together, indulging in unique dating experiences such as watching breathtaking sunsets, climbing scenic vantage points, and cycling through the old town.

Offline Love Blends Romance and Travel

Offline Love captures the essence of Nice and its neighboring cities, including Monaco, Cannes, and other famous French destinations.

In addition to the romance arc, it also became an avenue where participants rediscover themselves in the aspects of life and love. Unexpected platonic bonds were also formed between the singles as they shared perspectives and enthusiasm in the series.

Hosted by beloved comedy duo of Takahari Kurum and Matsui Kemuri alongside actress Kyoko Koizumi, the show features their wholesome and humorous commentary in each episode. Audiences also gets to feel and hear every moment through its official soundtrack, “Us” by Gracie Abrams featuring Taylor Swift.

Offline Love is a heartfelt and relatable dating show that gives singles hope and reignites romance for those already in relationships. But more than that, it showcases the Japanese “Red String Theory”—the idea that no matter the circumstances, destiny wins.
